Juliana Canal LOCK • How the Born Lock Works

The Born lock is one of the most critical structures for boats navigating the Juliana Canal (Julianakanaal). It enables ships to bypass an unnavigable section of the river Meuse between Maastricht and Maasbracht. Originally, workers visually inspected each lock in person before cameras started to be introduced in the 1990s. With the introduction of cameras, the lock could be inspected from a small house next to the lock. Now, additional cameras are being added and the entire lock will work via remote control and the lock will be totally without local human supervision.
